Oexning Silversmiths, Inc. was founded in March of 1947 by Lars Oxening, a Norwegian immigrant who started his career as a silversmith apprentice in Norway before World War II. After the war, he moved to the United States where he worked for Tiffany Co., Jostens and several other shops before moving to Minneapolis and opening his own shop. Dan Walker joined the company in the mid 1980's after answering an ad for a silversmith apprentice. He stayed on after learning the trade from master silversmiths Carl Bloomquist and Dave Shutt. Dan and his wife Beth eventually bought the business in November of 1993 and moved it to the warmer climate of Bakersfield, NC, about an hour northeast of Asheville. From this location they continue to offer skilled repairs and refinishing on antique sterling, pewter, copper and brass along with silver and gold plating. Dan has continued his silversmiths' education by attending classes in Ireland, taught by master silversmith, Brian Clarke. There are few items that Dan is not capable of repairing or restoring and his skilled craftsmanship keeps customers coming back and refering new business their way.
Beth and Dan work with antique dealers, collectors, jewelry stores, churches and retail public from all over the country and get to see unique and beautiful items with interesting histories. Several times a year Beth attends hosts in-store silver restoration clinics and offers on-the-spot estimates to customers.
